Following The Waymarkers

  Pilgrimage Waymarkers along the road
  posted November 6, 2010

The decision to stay in Oban for two nights before flying home was a good one for me. I pre-booked a room at Heatherfield House B & B. It is perched high on the hill above the oceanfront. I will have time to walk, write and reflect here before I get on a plane Monday morning for home.

All along this pilgrim’s way I have looked for waymarkers on the journey to give me a sense of the way to follow and also of the choices I can make along the road. There have been directional signposts and poles with white and black rings indicating a pull off on a single-track road. I’ve seen stones with arrows, stones piled in small cairns and signs warning of danger in the waters off the shore.

Oban seems to be full of waymarkers for walkers, those driving cars and buses. This way to the distillery. Follow this way up the hill to the Folly. Don’t enter this one-way road. You may get confused in Oban but it would be hard to get lost.

As I head home I will be listening for the new waymarkers in my heart that are part of this experience of being a pilgrim. I hope to be more aware and sensitive to the needs of others. I want to be consistent in my spiritual practices of prayer and following the Rule of the Iona Community. I plan to play my guitar more often and prepare for an Advent season of song.

If I can listen well to the waymarkers of the heart, I know the path of pilgrimage before me will continue to bring me closer to my understanding of God and the blessings and struggles that are along the way.
